Swans of Brighton 2010

The fall was a wonderful time for painting. Inspiration was everywhere. It was at this time that I took my camera to Brighton, Ontario, and observed the swans in the wetland there. I spent hours watching them glide effortlessly through the water, occasionally, tipping their rears in the air to harvest the edibles below. They seemed happy, and without a care in the world. I tried to capture this in my painting, choosing an uncomplicated composition, and a limited pallet.

Carving by Francis Horne Sr.

My brother, Vern Millward, is a carver in B.C. His work is wonderful, and he has taught me a lot about traditional native carving.

On one of my many trips to B.C., he introduced me to a soft spoken, native artist by the name of Francis Horne. Francis is a teacher of carving, and has been an inspiration to my brother.

I had not had the opportunity to view his work, until my brother emailed me this picture.

Needless to say, I was blown away.

Watercolor Painting

I recently completed a watercolor painting of a single columbine flower which was growing, despite the conditions, in my garden.

My experience with watercolor technique is limited. I have taken a few lessons, but found the process frustrating. This painting started out as a doodle really, which took the stress out of creating a frame worthy piece of art. I actually had fun with this, and loosened up a little, especially with the background.
